Specificities for heavy goods vehicles in Spain and Portugal
As in most Western European countries,
Spain and Portugal have their own toll systems, adapted to both light vehicles
and heavy goods vehicles and coaches.
In Spain, toll tags directly
transmit the transit information to the dealer companies, which allows
invoicing at the end of the month.
In Portugal, the toll
works via a radio wave system. The 1700 kilometres of motorways are accessible
to any vehicle subject to payment of the toll. 2 bridges in Lisbon, Ponte Vasco
de Gama and Ponte 25 de Abril, are also subject to tolls.
The amount of the toll charged depends on the
class of vehicle (two classes for heavy goods vehicles in Spain, and three in
Portugal) which is generally defined by 3 criteria :
